Obituary
Age 87, of Kalamazoo, passed away peacefully on June 18, 2026, at Kairos Dwelling. She was born on October 21, 1938, in Kalamazoo, Michigan, to Donald and Myrtle (DuPuis) McCarty. Mary Ann was a lifelong member of the Kalamazoo community and attended St. Augustine Catholic School. She made history in Parchment as the first soda fountain worker at Bellisle's General Store and the first bride married at St. Ambrose Catholic Church, where she and her husband remained devoted members for many years. Throughout her career, Mary Ann worked in healthcare administration, serving at Parchment Medical Clinic, Surgical Associates, and Health Care Midwest. Following her retirement, she continued her lifelong commitment to helping others by volunteering with Chime Elementary School and Prairie Ridge Elementary School. She also actively volunteered with the American Red Cross in the 1970s, and during her teenage years, Mary Ann was a member of the Civil Air Patrol. Mary Ann enjoyed a variety of hobbies and interests. She loved reading, working jigsaw puzzles, tending to her rose garden, and collecting dolls. She also cherished the companionship of her beloved cat, Mittens, who survives her. On October 29, 1955, she married Ronald Earl Fleckenstein, who preceded her in death in 2017. She was also preceded in death by her parents and her brothers, Donald and Robert McCarty. Mary Ann is survived by her children, Deborah "Debbie" (Joel) Steenholdt, Ronald "Mike" (Brenda) Fleckenstein, John (Laura) Fleckenstein, and Wendy Fleckenstein; 12 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; 8 great-great-grandchildren; her brother, John (Virginia) McCarty; her sister, Janet (Tom) Matecun; and several nieces, nephews, and friends. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, July 1, 2026, beginning at 10:00 AM, one hour prior to the memorial service at 11:00 AM at Langeland Family Funeral Homes Burial & Cremation Services, 3926 South 9th St., Kalamazoo, MI 49009. Interment will be at Mount Olivet Catholic Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the SPCA of Southwest Michigan, Wings of Hope Hospice - Allegan, or Kairos Dwelling.
