Mary F. Sutherland, 91, of Almena passed away Wednesday, May 1, 2024 at her home. She was born November 18, 1932 in Scotts, MI, the daughter of Lee Phillip and Gertrude (Brooks) Schau. Mary was a 1951 graduate of Climax-Scotts High School. On July 2, 1954 she was united in marriage to Clarence Sutherland who survives. Also surviving are five children, Jill (Harry) Loy, Scott Sutherland, Gail D. Davis, Lisa (Steve) Szeles and Dan Sutherland; 11 grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; sister-in-law, Dee Schau; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her six siblings, Marlene Little, Marcia Hughson, Marjorie Nash, Marvin, Marshall and Martin Schau, and an infant brother Phillip; two grandsons, Jason Sutherland and Alex Crook.

Clarence and Mary first settled in Comstock following Clarence's discharge from the Army, then moved to the Paw Paw area where they raised their family. Mary was an expert domestic engineer, and enjoyed cooking and baking, sewing, knitting and crocheting. She maintained a large vegetable garden, freezing and canning countless quarts of fruits and vegetables. She was also an avid reader, enjoyed researching family history and loved to travel. Mary was a member of Almena United Methodist Church and was active with the Mary & Martha group and taught Sunday School and Vacation Bible School.

Family and friends may gather for visitation from 5-8 PM Wednesday, May 8, 2024 at Adams Funeral Home, 502 W. Michigan Ave., Paw Paw, MI 49079. Cremation will follow the visitation and a memorial service will be held at 11 AM Saturday, May 11, 2024 at Almena United Methodist Church, 27503 CR 375, Paw Paw. She will laid to rest at Almena Cemetery at a later date. Memorials may be directed to Almena United Methodist Church.
