Obituary
Lynn Marie Hallberg Hall passed away in Kalamazoo on April 16, 2026 after a long illness. She is survived by her loving and devoted husband of 58 years, Bill; her children, Josh (Sonja Dean) and Sarah (Quan Nghiem); her grandchildren Matt, Kiernan, and Tara Dean-Hall; as well as many treasured family and friends whom Lynn loved dearly.
Born in Macon, GA on June 12, 1945, Lynn grew up in Bowling Green, Ohio, the daughter of Carl W. Hallberg and Jane Elizabeth Risk Hallberg. Carl and Jane were both teachers, he at Bowling Green State University, she in the Bowling Green Public Schools. As the children of educators, Lynn and her younger siblings, Bill and Julie, grew up in a home that nurtured their curiosity about the world and the people in it. Politics were never off the table, despite conflicting opinions in the house. The family traveled together frequently, visiting family in Arizona, Texas, and especially Michigan, where Lynn cherished time with her cousins and trips to her grandmother's blueberry farm. Throughout her life, her love for Michigan was a constant.
Summers in Michigan formed core memories that brought Lynn great comfort in later years; they were truly transformative. A summer at the Interlochen Center for the Arts with her beloved aunt Harriet Woldt, an accomplished cellist, nurtured Lynn's budding appreciation for classical music. Throughout her life, she was able to hum along to just about any classical piece in earshot. She could probably tell you the piece and composer as well.
Lynn graduated from Kalamazoo College, where she met Bill during their first year on campus. A history major, she spent part of her junior year living abroad in Caen, France. After college, Lynn and Bill married and first moved to Chicago, where Josh was born. After living briefly in Ann Arbor, they moved back to Kalamazoo, where Sarah was born. In Kalamazoo, they grew their circle of friends, raised their children, and built a life together. In the early 1980s, Lynn, Bill, Josh and Sarah spent one year living outside of Philadelphia. National Park Rangers at Washington's Headquarters in Valley Forge National Historic Park came to know Lynn on sight due to her many visits with family and friends.
A sensitive and empathetic person with a desire to help those in need, in her forties Lynn completed a Master's in Psychology at Western Michigan University. She then earned a PhD in Clinical Psychology, also at WMU. Most of her career was spent with the Department of Veterans Affairs (Vet Center) in Grand Rapids, where she focused on individual and group treatment for combat veterans and active service members with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. Lynn loved supporting people who sacrificed so much through their military service, and for the rest of her life took great pleasure in knowing she'd been able to help others in this way. She retired in 2011.
After retirement, Lynn and Bill enjoyed their life together at Lake Michigan, where she indulged in her lifelong passion for reading and kept up to date on world events (especially progressive politics). Lynn and Bill purchased a small RV and undertook epic road trips to all corners of the United States. They also leaned into snowbird life, spending winter months at Pelican Cove in Sarasota, Florida.
Lynn was preceded in death by her parents, Carl and Jane, her siblings, Bill and Julie, and many other cherished family members. She will be remembered for her intelligence, kindness, creativity, and empathy, not to mention a wicked sense of humor that was as hilarious as it was unexpected if you didn't know her well. Above all, Lynn will be missed dearly by her family, especially Bill. Their affection for each other was a true example of unconditional love.
The family wants to extend special thanks to the caregivers, nurses, and staff at Woodside in Friendship Village, as well as the team from Centrica Hospice. Their compassion and care for Lynn and her family will not be forgotten.
In lieu of flowers, the family encourages gifts in Lynn's memory to Friendship Village Kalamazoo 1400 N Drake Rd, Kalamazoo, MI 49006, Centrica Care Navigators 7100 Stadium Dr, Kalamazoo, MI 49009, the Alzheimer's Association 200 Turwill Ln Suite 6, Kalamazoo, MI 49006, and The Headstrong Project.
