Hoogstraten, Lula JoAnne 3/18/1931 - 5/23/2021 Kalamazoo Lula JoAnne "Jo" Hoogstraten passed away May 23, 2021 at the age of 90 with family at her side. She was born in Belvue, Kansas. She received her RN from the Saint Francis School of Nursing in Topeka, Kansas and subsequently served in the United States Navy during the Korean conflict. During this time, she met her Army husband William Hoogstraten who predeceased her after 50 years of marriage. She lived most of her adult life in Kalamazoo, Michigan. She was initially a homemaker but eventually returned to nursing, serving in several different capacities in the greater Kalamazoo area. She loved traveling in the RV with her husband. Their idea of a good vacation was not being at a 5-star resort but rather out in the middle of nowhere with the four-wheeler and a fishing pole. She also loved her cottage at the lake, loons and cats! She was proud of her Potawatomi heritage and could be counted on to liven up a party with a silly outfit, hat, earrings, or socks. She leaves behind her two daughters; Sharon Hoogstraten (Robert Gray), Shelley Hoogstraten (Lawrence Miller) and son Steven Hoogstraten (Lurinda), four grandchildren; Alex Gray, Dillon Gray (Hailey Willis), Ryley Hoogstraten, Cameron Hoogstraten, and great-grandchild, Sylvan Gray. Also left to mourn her loss are her sister Phyllis Riat, brothers-in-law Garrett Hoogstraten and Paul Force, sisters-in-law Joyce Hoogstraten and Gayle Hoogstraten and a host of nieces and nephews. A celebration of life will be announced at a later date. Those wishing to honor her memory may do so with a donation to the Resident Care Fund at Park Village Pines or the Resident Council Fund at the Alamo Nursing Home, both in Kalamazoo, MIchigan.
