Winchell, Katherine 7/30/1965 - 4/21/2022 Kalamazoo Kathy Winchell of Kalamazoo Michigan, Age 56, was prayed to heaven on April 21, 2022 with family at her side. She is out of pain and suffering, and though her physical presence will be missed, the person she is will be with us forever. Kathy was born in St. Joseph, Michigan, the daughter of Virginia (Parry) and Ronald Bedunah. Kathy grew up in the community of Stevensville where, as a youthful thespian, she spent time on the stage in school, church, and community musical theater productions. Moving to Kalamazoo after high school, Kathy continued her formal education at Western Michigan University, studying History and English. While a student at WMU she began her editing career working at The Western Herald. After graduating Kathy worked in several news outlets, including The Kalamazoo Gazette and The Battle Creek Enquirer as well as providing copy-editing at Biggs-Gilmore and Schawk. She also handled free-lance editing projects. Kathy was a lifelong United Methodist, actively loving church music, singing in the choirs, and ringing handbells. She was frequently asked to sing a solo or in small groups during church services, which she willingly did as her illness allowed. Kathy filled her free time knitting gifts for family and friends, reading, and playing games with her children. She also rang in the Kalamazoo Ringers, a community handbell ensemble and was a member of book clubs with friends throughout her lifetime. Kathy is survived by her children, Colin Winchell and Emma Winchell; her mother, Virginia Bedunah of St. Joseph; and her sister Christine (William) Landreville of Kalamazoo. She was preceded in death by her father, Ronald Bedunah. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to First United Methodist Church of Kalamazoo Phone Project or Music Ministry. Cremation has taken place and a memorial service at First United Methodist Church of Kalamazoo will take place on Sunday, May 15 at 2 pm with a time of visitation immediately following.
