Obituary
Judy was born to Miriam Epstein Lieberman and Irving Lieberman. Survivors include her Husband Alvin Rosenthal; Son David Davis; Daughter Elisabeth "Lis" Davis (Daniel Liebman) and Grandsons Nathan and Lucas Liebman; and Brother Robert (Liz) Lieberman.
Judy demonstrated curiosity and courage throughout her life. She grew up in Ardsley, NY and received her Bachelor of Science in biology from Stony Brook University. In 1974, she moved to Kalamazoo with her then husband, Richard Davis, just weeks before Lis was born. There she earned an MBA from Western Michigan University.
For many of her professional years, Judy was the respected Comptroller of the Douglass Community Association. She was known for her meticulousness, accuracy, hard work, and honesty. Judy was a very active and hard-working member of the Jewish community of Kalamazoo and served on numerous boards and committees. Among her many roles, she served as Treasurer of the Congregation of Moses and President of Sisterhood and of the local chapter of Hadassah. Ultimately, she became a Trustee of the Congregation. Unofficially, she welcomed guests and newcomers into her home and the community. Judy frequently served as a guide and educator around the Synagogue for interested non-Jewish individuals and groups. She loved the social and entertaining activities, such as the Family Dinners and organizing the annual Purim Play.
Judy and Al enjoyed their life together--reading, attending live theater, cooking, and exploring the world around them. From camping in a tent and later their red camper van in National and State Parks to their travels overseas (sometimes with friends), they embraced a mix of adventures with curiosity and verve.
Diagnosed with cancer of the jaw in 2022, Judy continued to demonstrate tremendous courage and strength. She found comfort in her loved ones, hearing about the activities of her grandsons, visiting with her friends and their dogs, all the while remaining curious and protective of the world around her.
Judy was a devoted, supportive, and loving wife, mother, grandmother, and friend. She was kind and generous, pragmatic and funny, and a pillar of strength. Unimpressed by wealth or status, she valued people for their actions. Through the person she was and the things she did, she made the world a better place. She will be sorely missed by many.
Services will be held at the Langeland Funeral Home on 9th Street, on Sunday, April 19 at 10:30 am with Rabbis Goldman and Spivak officiating. Burial will follow at Jewish Riverside Cemetery.
