McCain, Judith Ann 9/9/1935 - 4/18/2023 Mrs. McCain was born to Eugene and Harriet Purcell of Marshall, MI. She was the oldest of 3 children, preceded in death by her brother, Dick Purcell of Marshall, and survived by her sister, Claudia Dean of Marshall. In her youth, Judith was an active member of 4H, where she raised and showed livestock. As a depression era child, her K through 12th grade education was in a one room schoolhouse. She then attended Western Michigan University and, upon graduating, began a career in teaching. She was a loving wife, married in August of 1956 to James A. McCain of Livonia, MI. Their union lasted 53 years. He preceded her in death in 2008. Judy was a loving mother to her two children, Michael McCain of Kalamazoo, MI and Susan Porter of Richland, MI; and grandmother to James Porter of Kalamazoo, MI, John Porter Jr. of Richland, MI, Kayla McCain Reynolds and Kelsey McCain Poor of Alma, AR. At every stage in life, Judy was very involved in her community. She was a member of Rotary International, Garden Club, Ladies of The Lake and other civic functions and activities. She was known for her love of nature, outdoors, and art, and was an avid painter. She held many interests and hobbies, played piano and cello, and loved her many years in bridge club with friends. Known by friends and family alike, she shared her love of canning goods like her Elderberry jam and other preserves. Never one to sit still, Judy was known for her strong opinions and faith in God. She was a woman of great conviction, strength, and belief. You always knew where you stood with her. She always referred to herself as a "farm girl," which was very accurate. She optimized the words Mom, Wife and Friend. "You can take the girl out of the country, but you can't take the country out of the girl" is one of the most apt descriptions of Judy. She will be greatly missed but would not want those to mourn her passing but draw comfort that she has gone on to be with her Lord. A memorial service to celebrate Judy's life will be held at Calvary Bible Church, 855 S. Drake Rd. Kalamazoo, MI 49009 on Friday, May 5, 2023. Visitation will start at 10:00 am; service at 11:00 am; light lunch and refreshments to be served afterwards. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a charitable donation in Judy's name to The American Cancer Society or the Kalamazoo Nature Center.
