Joyce Newton

Joyce Ann (Mund) Newton, age 86, of Portage, Michigan, passed away on Friday, May 1, 2026 at Centrica Rose Arbor Hospice Facility. She was born January 22, 1940 in Reed City, Michigan. Joyce was one of fifteen children with eleven brothers and three sisters. She went to cosmetology school and worked as a hair dresser. Joyce also worked in Wolverine glove factory, served school lunches and worked at McPherson Plastic in Otsego. In her spare time, Joyce loved to travel, dig in her flower beds and help others through her church activities at the local United Methodist Church. She also enjoyed watching Tiger's baseball and putting jigsaw puzzles together. Joyce was always busy with something and didn't like to sit still. She will be greatly missed.

Joyce is survived by her children Gary (Jan) Cookingham of Las Vegas, NV, Deb (Cookingham) Patterson of Vicksburg, her nine grandchildren Colt, Alee, Bree, Shay, Wyatt, Kade, Morgan, Lauren and Kristin, her fifteen great-grandchildren, and six siblings Alvin Mund, Ronald Mund, Cecil Mund, Richard Mund, Arlene (Tom) Farr, Marilyn Walworth and her step-children Julia (Newton) Bentley, Sue Newton, Laura Newton, Winnie (Newton) Bryon, Missy (Newton) Boss, and Gilbert Newton.

She was preceded in death by her husband Don Newton, son James Lee Cookingham, her parents Vernon and Mary (Gerboski) Mund, and her seven brothers Philip, Ralph, Warren, Marshall, Terry, Wayne, Frank and sister Roberta.

In accordance with Joyce's wishes, cremation will take place and there will be no funeral service. Family will gather for a grave side service at a later date.
