Age 93, of Portage, passed away on May 29, 2026, at Bronson Methodist Hospital. She was born on July 24, 1932, in Grand Haven, Michigan, to George and Henrietta (Spoelma) Westerhouse. Joy attended Grand Haven High School and married the love of her life, Alvin "Al" J. Daane, while she was still in the 11th grade. After their marriage, the couple lived in Allegan before moving to Vicksburg, where Al worked for Harding's Markets. Eventually, Al became a partner in Harding's on Portage Road. In 1972, they started their own successful family business, Daane's Wines and Liquors and Daane's Catering. Joy worked alongside her husband for more than 50 years, operating the store and catering business and helping make it a beloved part of the community. Joy loved boating and sailing, despite never learning to swim. She spent 71 years living on Austin Lake in Portage and cherished time spent on the water. She also enjoyed traveling, especially cruises and trips to the Caribbean. She is survived by her children, Deb (Rick) VanGorp and Jeff Daane; her grandson, Ian (Amber) Daane; great-grandchildren, Analy, Christopher, Adam, and Victoria; and her sister-in-law, Shirley Westerhouse. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Al in 2006; her son, Randy Daane in 2018; her infant son, Ricky Alan Daane; and her siblings, Larry Westerhouse, Ron (Marge) Westerhouse, Ken (Sharyn) Westerhouse, Don Westerhouse, and Beverly (Dave) Alman. Visitation will be held on Monday, June 8, 2026, from 10 am to the time of the funeral service at 12 pm at Langeland Family Funeral Homes Burial & Cremation Services, 411 East Centre Ave., Portage, MI 49002. Interment will follow at Mt. Ever-Rest Memorial Park – South. Memorial contributions may be made to Pretty Lake Camp or the Alzheimer's Foundation.
