Joseph Litvin Chess, MD, passed away peacefully on December 11, 2025 at University of Michigan Hospital.

Joseph was born in Havertown, PA. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Nancy Chess. He is survived by his children, Laura Chess (Brad Newhart) and Benjamin Chess (Sarah Gutin); and his cherished grandchildren, Madeline, Ona, Ambrose, Leah, and Adam, who brought him immense pride and joy.

A distinguished orthopedic surgeon, Joseph dedicated his life to medicine, serving not only as a clinician but also as a program director and academic chairman. He was deeply committed to teaching and mentorship, shaping the careers of countless physicians and leaving a lasting impact on the field of orthopedics.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Joseph embraced life with curiosity and enthusiasm. He loved fine food and wine, traveling, cars, playing the piano, time at the Jersey shore, and, above all, being with his family. His wit, laugh, intellect, and presence will be deeply missed by all who knew him. Following a leukemia diagnosis in 2020, Joseph underwent a bone marrow transplant which afforded him several more years with family and friends.

For many years, Joseph was in a loving relationship with his partner, Renee Brady, who held his hand until the end. Her devotion and compassion were a profound comfort to him and undoubtedly kept him alive, happy, laughing, and loved for several more years than expected.

A Celebration of Life will be held after the New Year.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Joseph's memory to Blood Cancer United.
