Joe Erickson, 102, passed away at the Sanford Bemidji Medical Center, Bemidji, Minnesota on March 6, 2022 with family by his side. Joe was born November 29, 1919 in Indus, Minnesota the son of Arne and Anna (Alver) Erickson. He was the fourth of five children. Joe was raised on a dairy and sheep farm. He left home at age 18 and soon joined the Royal American Carnival shows based in Florida. He entered the Army on December 3, 1941 being trained as a medic. He served in military hospitals in Wales, France and lastly Belgium within 25 miles of the Battle of the Bulge. After discharge he worked 38 years for Sutherland Paper Company in Kalamazoo, Michigan retiring as a Tower Boss. Joe was united in marriage to Bertha Luckstein who he worked with in World War II. They had two children. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, traveling, gardening and reading. Joe was a K-Wings, Red Wings and Detroit Tigers fan. After retirement he helped neighbors and friends with odd jobs and did roofing with a dear friend until his 80's. Survivors include daughter Judy (Duane) Puro, grandsons Matthew (Bonnie) Puro and Eric (Tina) Puro, great grandchildren Caitlin (David) Jokippii Krueger, Hope Puro, Annalee Puro, and Emmalyn Puro. Also, many nieces and nephews. Preceding Joe in death were his parents, wife Bertha, brother John, sisters Agnes, Martha, Henrietta, daughter Karen and granddaughter Christine Puro. There was no formal service. A celebration of life will take place summer of 2022.
