He is also survived by several nieces, nephews, and extended family members.

He was preceded in death by his father, Richard McCartney; son, Tim McCartney; mother, Virginia Francis McCartney Hoekzema; stepfather, Dr. George Hoekzema; brother, Craig McCartney; stepbrother, David Hoekzema.

Following John's wishes, cremation has taken place. The McCartney family will receive friends and relatives on Saturday, January 3, 2026, from 2-3 p.m. at the Schipper Funeral Home LTD in Colon. A memorial service will immediately follow the visitation beginning at 3 p.m. Private interment of ashes will take place at Lakeside Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions in memory of John be mailed to WGVU Public Media (wgvu.org) or the American Heart Association.
