John L. Appelgren

Passed away early Monday morning on August 20, 2007, at the age of 78. Born on May 26, 1929, Bronson Hospital, Kalamazoo. He was one of three boys including twin, Jack and younger brother, Robert. Many old timers will remember his parents "Club Cigar Store" on Portage St. back in 1954, offering sodas, sundaes, sporting goods and cigarettes. John spent most of his career life on the golf course and as a Claims Adjuster for numerous Insurance Companies. Eventually launching his own independent "Appelgren Insurance Agency" in downtown Kalamazoo. Later he and a partner started the Appelgren Muller Construction company for insurance claims and restoration, where he retired from. A 1948 Kalamazoo Central graduate, served in the Army, Parsons Business School and a short time at Olivet College. During John's career he also owned many of Kalamazoo's rental properties accommodating hundreds of WMU students. He leaves behind his wife, Rosemary of 56 years; three daughters, Nancy Carr of Kalamazoo, Jill Bello of Cape Coral, FL & Lisa Appelgren of Ft. Wayne, IN; five grandchildren, one great-grandchild and several nieces and nephews. According to his wishes, he will be cremated. Family and friends will have a private "Celebration of Life" Reunion Sat. Aug. 25, 1-5.
