James MacVicar

Dr. James (Jim) Edwin MacVicar, MD, age 92, of Bradenton, Florida, died peacefully at his home on August 3, 2026. He was born March 5, 1934, to Neil and Marion (Muzzy) MacVicar in Lansing, Michigan. He grew up in Flint, Michigan and attended Flint Northern High School, where he met Nancy E. Papworth. Jim and Nancy were married June 18, 1955, and shared 62 years together. Jim graduated from the University of Michigan Medical School in 1959, interned at St. Mary's Hospital (Grand Rapids, MI), and completed his ophthalmology residency at Indiana University Medical Center (Indianapolis, IN). He was also proud to have served as a Captain in the United States Air Force from 1960 to 1963.

Jim was an esteemed ophthalmologist and cared for patients in the Kalamazoo, Michigan community for over 30 years. Following retirement, he and Nancy moved to Holmes Beach, FL, and more recently to Freedom Village in Bradenton, FL. All who knew Jim were touched by his love, faith, friendship, hospitality, wisdom, fun-loving nature, and his overall kindness and generosity. Jim loved to reminisce, and some of his fondest memories were of many years on Gull Lake, gatherings with friends and family, snow skiing in Michigan and out West, traveling, and cheering on the University of Michigan Wolverines.

Jim was preceded in death by his loving wife, Nancy, and sister, Sue Ann Spillane (Benjamin). He is survived by his brother, Neil Dean MacVicar (Linda). Jim was a wonderful father and grandfather, and is survived by son Neil (Sandy), son David (Kay), daughter Laura Hooks (Clif); grandchildren James (Libby), Neil "Alex" Alexander, Matthew (Kristin), Louis (Aidana), Amanda Graves (Brett), Grant Hooks and Caleb Fisher; and great-granddaughters, Elizabeth and Charlotte. There will be no Florida service. At a later date, there will be a committal service for both Jim and Nancy at the Fort Custer National Cemetery in Augusta, Michigan. Memorial donations may be made to the American Diabetes Association, the Freedom Village Memorial Scholarship Fund, or a charity of your choice.
