Penrose, James F. III "Rick" London Passed away Wednesday, May 25, 2022. Rick was born March 9, 1952 in Fountain Hill, PA the son of James, Jr. and Patricia (Bruder) Penrose. Nicknamed Rick, he excelled in academic achievements as well in athletics. He was a 1971 graduate of Kalamazoo Hackett High School. He graduated from Western Michigan University in 1974; Cambridge University with a Bachelor's in Law in June of 1975; and earned his Master of Laws from Columbia University in 1981. He was united in marriage to his loving wife Carolyn (Lee) Penrose in 1977. He was employed by Standard and Poors where he was the Managing Director and Head of Legal and Regulatory Affairs, EMEA. He wrote articles for the WSJ, American Heritage of Invention & Technology and The New Criterion. Rick was an avid runner. He ran at least 22 marathons start to finish & they included the London and Paris Marathons, Atlantic City, NJ Shore, NJ Waterfront, Virginia Beach. One of the most significant achievements was doing the 100k (62 mile) race in France called the General Leclerc race no less than 4 times in the late 80s. After rupturing his Achilles tendon, running was out and swimming was found to be his new passion. Some of his significant swims were obviously achieving the Triple Crown of Open Water Swimming in 2013 by completing the Manhattan Island Swim 2013, Catalina Channel Swim 2013 and the English Channel in 2013 in only 10 months and is one of only 265 swimmers up to 2021 to have achieved this. He started competitive open water swimming at 59 with Lake Memphremagog and finished in 2021 with a 3 way across Lake Willoughby of 15 miles. Other important swims included across Lake Zurich 16 miles in 2017, and the 8 Bridges Hudson River Swim in 2020 of 19 miles. He nearly completed the Ireland to Scotland swim but pulled up short due to jellyfish. A front page article in the Kalamazoo Gazette acknowledges James swimming of the English Channel approximately 10 years ago. Rick was quite the adventurer. Always looking for a new adventure and frequently enjoying time with family and friends - especially in S. Haven, MI while visiting his brother Tony. Rick was a unique and fun-loving individual like all the Penroses. He is survived by his wife Carolyn; his son, Douglas Alexander Carne (Emily Kilbourne) Penrose, grandchildren, Elizabeth and Catherine; brothers and sister, Susan DeBoer, Christopher Penrose, Anthony Penrose; and several nieces and nephews. Memorials may be directed to the American Cancer Society for pancreatic and liver cancer research. To view Rick's personalized guestbook please visit https://www.langelands.com
