Jack Matthews

Jack Wayne Matthews, 80, of Portage, Michigan, passed away unexpectedly on April 28, 2026. Born on March 15, 1946, in Niles, Michigan, Jack grew up on the family farm and graduated from New Troy High School. His life was marked by hard work, a spirit of adventure, and a deep love for his family.

After high school, Jack became a journeyman and pursued a career as a mold maker. His dedication to his craft led him to the Kalamazoo area, where he founded Precision Molds Inc. in 1978. Jack poured his heart into the business, running it successfully until his retirement.

On August 21, 1981, Jack married Barbara in Portage, Michigan. Together they built a life filled with love and shared adventures. Jack was a devoted husband and father who cherished time spent with his family.

Jack's life was enriched by many passions. He loved sailing his Hobie Cat on Gourdneck Lake and spent countless hours fishing and hunting with his brothers. He enjoyed collecting unique items that others might overlook-always ready with just the right part or piece when someone needed it. Above all else, Jack treasured time with his grandchildren. Whether playing in the lake with them or teaching them skills like fishing or fixing things around the house, he found immense joy in their company.

A man of faith and service to others, Jack was a member of St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Church in Portage. Known for being a giver and helper who liked to keep busy, he touched many lives through his kindness, generosity, and friendship.

He is survived by his beloved wife Barbara Matthews; children David (Stephanie) Matthews, Jacqui (Michelle) Struna-Matthews, Nicholas (Samantha) Matthews, and Nathan Matthews; grandchildren Michael Matthews, Shawnee (Brooks) Rethwill, Brendan Matthews, Hailey Matthews, Brayden Matthews, Sofia Matthews, and Remi Matthews; step-grandchildren Michael, Kaitlyn, and Sarah Branyon; as well as several great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his siblings Kay (Alan) Ritter, Bob (Carol) Matthews, Tom (Sandy) Matthews, Bill (Vivian) Matthews; sisters-in-law Barb Matthews and Mary Lou Hannigan; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents Fred and Frances (Van Bergen) Matthews and his brother Frederick "Joe" Matthews.

Visitation will be held at Langeland Family Funeral Home 3926 S. 9th St. Kalamazoo, MI 49009, on Tuesday, May 12, from 5 to 7 PM when a rosary service will begin. A funeral Mass will be held at St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Church 1150 W Centre Ave, Portage, MI 49024 on Wednesday, May 13 with Fr. Mark Vyverman presiding. Visitation will begin at 10 until Mass starts at 11. A luncheon will follow at the church. Jack will be laid to rest during a private family ceremony at Portage South Cemetery.
