Henry VanDenBerg

Age 78, passed away from this earthly life and entered into the presence of his Lord and Savior on Saturday, February 8, 2020. Henry was born in Kalamazoo on June 14, 1941, the son of the late Anthony and Janet (Sikkema) VanDenBerg. He attended Kalamazoo Christian Schools through the 11th grade and graduated from Portage Central High School. He joined the United States Navy and loved his time on the flagship, USS Newport News, traveling to many places around the world. Henry loved being on the water and restored a number of wood boats. He started working for his father in the furniture business and held various sales positions until his near-fatal accident at the age of 51, from which he never fully recovered. Henry is survived by his wife of 51 years, Gert (Apotheker) VanDenBerg; daughters, Amy (Scott) Cook and Linda (Chad) Werkhoven; son, Mark (Michelle) VanDenBerg and grandchildren, Joshua (Breena) Cook, Katie Cook, Emily (Peter) Runia, Andrea, Rachel and Cora Werkhoven and Henry, Oliver and Linus VanDenBerg. He is also survived by his siblings, David (Anne) VanDenBerg, Margaret Brussee, Cal (Beth) VanDenBerg and Doris (Jerry) Wolthuis, as well as many sisters and brothers in-law. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Ken and Dewey VanDenBerg. Henry was a member of Grace Christian Reformed Church where he served as a deacon and enjoyed singing in the Men's Chorus and playing the harmonica. A memorial service will be held at Grace CRC, 1724 Whites Rd., Kalamazoo, on Thursday, February 13, 2020 at 2:00 PM with Pastor Greg Timmer officiating. A time of visitation will take place one hour prior to the service at the church. Private interment with full military honors will be at Ft. Custer National Cemetery.
