Cook, Grant F. Plainwell Age 94 passed away at his home on September 6, 2022. Grant was born in Kalamazoo on May 8, 1928. He was preceded in death by his parents Frank L. and Emma Rose Cook; his wife of 30 years, Evelyn June Cook; sisters Helen Watson, Waneta Price, Doris Winkler; and brother Carl Cook. Surviving are sons Dale (Lynda) Spitler, Chris (Fran) Spitler,; sister Naomi Deckard; grandchildren Chad and Sarah Spitler and Justin Spitler; great-grandchildren Madison, Cameron and his namesake Grant; as well as several nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews. Grant was a special man who led a long and active life. He grew up in the Kalamazoo area where, at 9 years old, he built a soap box derby out of an original ivory soap box. He made it almost halfway down Westnedge Hill before the steering cable came loose! Grant joined the Navy during WWII when he was 17. He served from 1945-1946 as Seaman 1st Class and baked for the officers aboard the USS Franklin D. Roosevelt. In 1950, he was drafted into the Army during the Korean War as Staff Sergeant. He was a lifetime member of the VFW. In 1955after several years of enjoying life riding Harley and Indian motorcycleshe married the love of his life, Evelyn "June" Wall, and began a new adventure. They enjoyed their 2 boys, traveling, and spending time up north at their cabin on the river with family and friends. After June passed, he moved to Pine Lake. Grant worked at Sutherland Paper for 22 years before going to LSI/KALA as a lithographer where he retired after 25 years. He spent his retirement traveling and enjoying life on Pine Lake where he lived out the rest of his life. At Grant's request, cremation has taken place and ashes will be interred at Prairieville Cemetery. Also at his request, there will be no funeral or graveside service. A celebration of his life will be scheduled at a later date.
