Gerald John Gernaat passed away peacefully with his family by his side on Thursday, Nov. 30th 2023 at the age of 91. Gerald was born on June 27th, 1932 in Kalamazoo, MI, the eldest son of Garrett and Sue (Vanderwoude) Gernaat. Gerald grew up working in the celery fields with his family. He worked for the Dunkley Corporation out of High School traveling to many states. Gerald then pursued being a carpenter and was a self-employed Custom Home Builder in the greater Kalamazoo area for over 40 years. Gerald was a lifelong member of Third Reformed Church (CenterPoint) and attended Haven Church his last few years with his family. On June 14th, 1963 Gerald married Judith DePriester who preceded him in passing on February 4th, 2015. They enjoyed 51 years together and spent many years golfing in their couple's golf league along with many golf trips up North and trips south in the Winter. Gerald enjoyed his tractors, golfing and spending time hunting at the cabin in Watersmeet, MI. Gerald was always present at his grandchildren's school or sporting events. He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather who will be missed by all. Gerald is survived by two sons, Bruce and Tim (Vicky) Gernaat; five grandchildren, Jacob, Benjamin, Alyssa, Kylie and Kennedy Gernaat; special friend, Jackie Wolthuis; sisters-in-law, Diane and Sandy Gernaat; nieces, nephews and extended family. Gerald was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Judy; brothers, Donald and William Gernaat. A funeral service to honor and celebrate his life will be held at Joldersma and Klein Funeral Home on Tuesday, December 5, 2023, beginning at 12:00 p.m. The family will receive friends from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., two hours prior to the service. Gerald will be laid to rest at West Cooper Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be given to the charity of one's choice, c/o the funeral home.
