Gary Lee King, 68, of Niles passed away at 2:25 a.m. Monday, December 14th in his residence following a lengthy illness. Gary was born November 18, 1952 in Allegan, MI to the late Marilyn (Reed) and Donald King and had lived in Niles since 200 coming from South Bend. Gary graduated from Portage Central High School in 1971 and attended Western Michigan University and Kalamazoo College. He loved sports and was a very talented baseball player. The Detroit Tigers wanted him to sign with them. He was also a talented fisherman and one year placed third in the professional Bass Masters Indiana State Fishing Tournament. He loved golf and his Wednesday golf league was very special to him. Gary loved to travel and because of this he wore Hawaiian shirts all the time. He always played music from the 8000 songs on his phone. During his last years he loved fishing on his boat and blasting music over the five speaker sound system. On March 10, 2000 in South Bend he married Julie Lind (Lindley) who survives. He is also survived by two daughters, Gretchen Day (Terry) of Elkhart and Samantha White (Greg) of Edwardsburg, MI; four sons, Gary L. King, Jr. of Kentucky, Jayson Lind of Granger, Eric Lind of South Bend, and A. Jay Lind of Grand Rapids, MI; four grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; and his sister, Jill Beatty (Patrick) of Nashville, TN. There will be no visitation or services at this time. Cremation will take place with inurnment at Porter Rae Cemetery, Potato Creek State Park. On June 12, 2021 at Noon in the back yard of the family home there will be a Hawaiian themed funeral gathering for Gary. More information will be shared on Facebook closer to June, 2021.
