Garret Doorlag

Doorlag, Garret Portage Went to be with his Lord and Savior on Saturday evening, August 7, 2021. Garret was born March 11, 1927 in Kalamazoo to the son of Henry and Rena (Engberts) Doorlag. He was told "the doctor brought him and his siblings as new babies in the doctor bag". Prior to his retirement in 1989 he worked as a line man with Consumers Energy for nearly 40 years. He was a member of Prairie Edge Christian Reformed Church where he served on the Consistory as Elder; along with various other activities and committees. Garret loved traveling, camping, the outdoors, enjoyed fishing, golf, and spending time with his family. On May 19, 1950, he was united in marriage to Pauline (Roobol) who preceded him in death on August 15, 1967. On October 24, 1969 he married Martena (VanMeekeren) who preceded him in death on August 23, 2020. Garret was also preceded in death by a son-in-law, Phillip Riggins; 5 brothers and 2 sisters. He is survived by his children, Allen (Jane) Doorlag, Janet Riggins, Gary (Diane) Doorlag, Tom (Carol) Doorlag; 12 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren, 2 great-great grandchildren; brothers and sister, Edward (Pat) Doorlag, John Doorlag, James (Ruth) Doorlag, Alice Bosma, Robert (Judy) Doorlag; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Services will be held at 11:00am Thursday, August 12 at Prairie Edge Christian Reformed Church, 9316 Oakland Dr with Pastor Bill Fernhout officiating. Friends may meet the family from 5:00-7:00pm Wednesday evening, August 11 at the Langeland Family Funeral Homes, 3926 South 9th Street, Kalamazoo, MI 49009 and from 10:00-11:00am Thursday prior to the service at church. A light reception will follow the service and interment will be in Mt. Ever-Rest Memorial Park South.
