Every year he held the "Byars Boys Cup" during the Stanley Cup playoffs with his sons, where they'd hold a tournament on Xbox hockey. He was an avid fisherman and loved packing everything up to take the entire family camping. In the evenings after working long days you could find him shooting hoops or playing football with his kids. He loved cooking for people and would man the grill at family gatherings, cooking up the best food around. He loved finding good deals at the flea markets and would barter to get the best price.
