Edith (Schreer) Ragotzy

RAGOTZY (SCHREER), Edith

Passed away peacefully January 12, 2012. She was born August 13, 1927 in Brighton Michigan daughter of Edith and Otto Schreer. Edith is survived by one sister, Frieda Kourt. Edith came to the Kalamazoo area to attend Western State Teacher College (WMU) with her sister, Frieda. She enjoyed telling stories about riding the trolley and her first job in a one-room schoolhouse. Her heart and soul revolved around her students and her own children and grandchildren. Edith taught for Portage Public Schools for over 30 years. Whenever she was out, former students would approach her with fond memories. Edith had many friends who were very important to her. She was a member of the Lord of Life Lutheran Church. She loved to stitch, knit and play cards, but mostly she loved her family. She was preceded in death by her husband of 37 years, Philip D. Ragotzy. Edith is survived by her children, Steve (Krista) Ragotzy, Ron Ragotzy, and Jim (Laura) Ragotzy; and grandchildren, Devin, Kaity, Austin, Declan, Matt, and Leslie Ragotzy. Visitation is scheduled for Tuesday January 17th at 10:00 AM at The Lord of Life Lutheran Church on 9420 Portage Road, Portage Mi 49002, with a funeral service following at 11:00 AM. The Reverend Joan Herbon will be presiding. In lieu of flowers, a memorial gift may be made to The Lord of Life Lutheran Church or the Greater Kalamazoo United Way.
