Dr. George M. Nielsen
Kalamazoo, MI.
It is with sadness that we announce the recent passing of Dr. George M. Nielsen. Born in 1934, George was the only child of the late Marius and Jimmie Nielsen. He was truly proud of his Danish heritage. After graduating from Ohio Wesleyan University, George earned a Ph.D. in mathematics at the University of Wisconsin. In 1963, he joined the faculty at Kalamazoo College. While George was teaching for thirty-six years he also served as the foreign student advisor for twenty of those years. Many of those students remained in touch with him over the years. A former student from Japan visited with George just a month before his passing. George died on September 14, 2023, in Kalamazoo, where he continued to make his home after his retirement. A Celebration of Life for George will be held in the Light Fine Arts Building on the campus of Kalamazoo College at 3:00 p.m., on Saturday, October 28, 2023. Per his desire his cremains will be interred in the family plot on Woodlawn Cemetery, Wadsworth, Ohio. Memorial contributions may be made to Fontana Chamber Arts, in c/o the funeral home.
