Dorothy Jean Callender Battle Creek Dorothy Jean Callender, 83, of Battle Creek, died Friday, April 4, 2008 at Bronson Hospital in Kalamazoo. She was born on June 7, 1924 in Benton Harbor to Clifford R. and Harriet J. (Johnson) Ives. Dorothy graduated from Benton Harbor High School in 1942. She married Charles J. Callender on October 27, 1943 in St. Joseph, MI, he preceded her in death in 2006. Dorothy was employed by the W.T. Grant store and also the VA Medical Center for nine years as a supervisor in dietetics. She is survived by a daughter, Donna M. Callender, a son, Robert L. (Margaret "Peggy") Callender, all of Battle Creek; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; a brother, Ronald Ives of Benton Harbor; and a daughter-in-law, Jane Denotter of Battle Creek. She was also preceded in death by sons Edward and Charles "Jack" Callender, two sister and five brothers. Dorothy was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and its Altar Society. Dorothy was a volunteer at the Food Bank and VA Medical Center for over 15 years. She enjoyed playing bingo and crossword puzzles. Friends may call after 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Richard A. Henry Funeral Home where family will receive friends from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. A Rosary will be held at 7 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 11:00 a.m. Wednesday at St. Joseph Catholic Church with the Rev. Fr. John Fleckenstein officiating. Interment will be held at 1:00 p.m. Thursday at Riverview Cemetery in St. Joseph, MI. Memorial contributions may be given to St. Joseph Catholic Church.
