David Lee Hurd, of Kalamazoo, passed away peacefully on December 11, 2019 of natural causes with family by his side. He was born on March 4, 1938, son of Frank and Dorothy (Diettra) Hurd. He worked many jobs at the same time throughout his life. As a teenager, he worked on a farm and swept and mopped at Grants and other stores. He served as an E3 Seaman in the Naval Reserves from 1955-1963. Dave turned to printing as his career, working for Merchants Publishing Company for 40 years. He worked his way up to managing the press room. He was the man with all the answers. David lived in Recreation Park as a child. He graduated from Comstock High School. Dave's passion was his family. He took his family on trips through the years, covering virtually every state, including many fishing trips to Canada with the guys. He cared for and loved his wife, Janet, of 61 years, who survives. Also surviving are his three children, David Jr. of Holt, Michigan, Gary (Tammy) of Kalamazoo, and Lorie Morgan of Kalamazoo; four granddaughters, Chelsea, Janae, and Breanna of Holt, Michigan and Sara Morgan of Portage; three siblings, Patricia (Gene) Butler of Inverness, Florida, Bonnie Hall of Portage, and Frank Jr. (Penny) of Scotts; as well as several nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, parents-in-law, Russell and Betty Schuyler; and brother-in-law, Rex Hall. Per his wishes, cremation has taken place and there will be no funeral. There will be a Celebration of Life Luncheon at the Richland Community Hall at 8985 Gull Road, Richland, Michigan 49083 from 12-3:00 PM on Saturday, December 14, 2019. There will be a private burial at Riverside Cemetery at a later date. The family is thankful for Upjohn Nursing Home and Hospice Care of Southwest Michigan, as both were very caring and considerate to them. Memorial donations may be made to Hospice Care of Southwest Michigan or Upjohn Care and Rehabilitation Center c/o Heritage Community of Kalamazoo.
