Charles was born May 10, 1927 in Chicago, Illinois, the son of Christian and Ruth (nee Hopkins) Buchtrup. He was baptized into the Christian faith on October 23, 1927 and confirmed into the Lutheran faith on May 23, 1941 at Hope Lutheran Church in Chicago, Illinois. He had two sisters, Dorothy Janet Kalinak and Eloise Ruth Holstrom and husband Richard who preceded him in death as did his parents. He was drafted into the U.S. Army after completing high school at the end of WWII. After being discharged from the military, he attended Hope College in Holland, Michigan and then returned to Chicago. He married Kathryn Baehre of Kent City, Michigan on August 25, 1951. He was employed for 43 years in the corrugated packaging industry in sales and sales service positions.

Kathryn and Chuck, as he was known by most, were blessed with five children, a daughter, Janet Louise, who preceded her dad in death at the age of 29. Surviving are his wife, Kathryn, and children, son John and his wife Ailene and their children, Erin of Honolulu, HI and Adrienne and husband Josh of Portage, MI. Son, Daniel and his wife Susan of Kalamazoo, MI. Son, Stephen and his wife Julia and their children, Matthew and Meaghan of Woodstock, GA. And son, Mark and his son Benjamin. A nephew, David Holstrom and his wife Jenny of Portland, OR. And a niece, Dorothy Weiss and her husband Gary of Vancouver, WA.

Chuck's Christian faith led him to always be active in church life as is his wife and children, grandchildren, and extended family. In his younger years he enjoyed sports, baseball, basketball, and especially golf and loved boating and fishing with family and friends. He loved his family and always enjoyed those special times together with them.

The funeral service will be held at Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church, 1461 Sparta Hwy, Crossville, Tennessee, 38572. The service will take place on September 16th at 11:00 am. The service will also be live-streamed on Shepherd of the Hills website.

An additional funeral service will be held at St. Michael Lutheran Church, 7211 Oakland Dr, Portage, MI, 49024. The service will take place on September 30th at 11:00 am. The service will be live-streamed on St. Michael's website.

Chuck was called to his eternal rest on July 19, 2023. Cremation has taken place and his remains will be interned in Portage, MI.
