Arthur James "AJ/Jim" Dodd, 77, passed away on August 3, 2024, at Centrica Rose Arbor Hospice in Kalamazoo, Michigan with his wife and children by his side. Born on September 12, 1946, in Dowagiac, Michigan to Kenneth and Wilma (Purvis) Dodd.
Jim graduated from Dowagiac Union High School in 1964. Soon after high school, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and proudly served his country from 1965-1969.
His commitment to public service was evident through his distinguished career in law enforcement. Jim served as a Deputy Sheriff for the Cass County Sheriff's Department from 1969 to 1972, and subsequently for the Kalamazoo County Sheriff's Department from 1972 until his retirement in 2003.
Jim met his beloved bride-to-be, Elizabeth Hogg in 1972. They were married on July 21, 1973 in Kalamazoo where they made their home and raised their two children.
Beyond his professional life, Jim was an avid trap and skeet shooter. He enjoyed shooting at the Southwest Michigan Gun Club, reloading and deer hunting with friends and family. Jim could often be found spending time in his garage fixing things or building something he had created. His favorite times were spent with his grandkids, his family and with the many dogs that he and Liz adopted over the years.
Jim was always described as a kind and friendly man who dearly loved his family. His warm presence will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
He is survived by his loving wife of 51 years, Elizabeth Dodd of Lawton, his two children, Megan and her husband Justin Holmes of Macomb, and Derek Dodd and his partner Samantha Jolly of Bellingham, Washington, and his two grandchildren, Avery and Connor Holmes of Macomb. He also leaves behind his brother, Jerry Dodd and his wife Donna of Dowagiac, his sister-in-law, Edna and her husband Ronald Thompson of Richland, and several dear nieces and nephews. Jim was preceded in death by an infant sister, his parents, Kenneth and Wilma Dodd, and his father and mother-in-law, Edwin and Lewisa Hogg.
At his request, there will be no services, he will be laid to rest at a later date during a private family ceremony. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Centrica Hospice of Southwest Michigan or The Alzheimer's Association in memory of Jim. His legacy of kindness and dedication will continue to inspire those who were fortunate enough to know him.
