Claxton, Alvin E. Mattawan Alvin Edward Claxton passed away peacefully on Friday, March 5, 2021 at Rose Arbor Hospice at the age of 85. He was born in Evarts, Kentucky to the late Everett and Della Claxton. Alvin attended school in Evarts Kentucky. He entered the United States Army in 1954 and served 3 years. After his service in the army he moved to Ypsilanti, Michigan to work at Evans Products as a journeyman welder. He retired after working for the State of Michigan Mental Health Department. Alvin will also be remembered for his dedication and service as a Mason for over 47 years. He was an honorary member of several lodges, and loved the Brotherhood by helping and mentoring other Masons. Alvin had a talent for gardening and enjoyed tending to his flowers and feeding his birds. He had a quick-wit and could always make people laugh with his stories and jokes. He cherished time spent with his family, going on camping adventures together and loved spoiling his grandchildren and his dog, Doodles. Alvin had a strong love for his family, friends and his wife, Jan. Alvin will be remembered and missed by many for his genuine kindness, his selfless service to anyone in need and his big smile. Alvin was preceded in death by: his parents; son, David Claxton; brothers: Jimmy Robbins, Eyvind Claxton, Ervin Claxton; sisters: Anna Mae Nolan and Pearl Johnson. He is survived by: his wife, Jan Claxton; children: Crista (Stephen) Stencel and Danny Claxton; children by marriage: Brad (Tracy) Simonds, Paul Simonds and Mark (Jill) Simonds; grandchildren: Carrie (Josh), Amanda (Jon), Brandon (Mary), Daniel (Brittney), Matthew, Alec, Jacob, Griffen, Kristin, Gracen, Abbie, Andrew, Maddie and great-grandchildren: Madison, Kamryn, Charlotte and Bailey. Alvin is also survived by his brothers, George Claxton and Leon (Sandy) Claxton as well as many nieces and nephews and his Masonic Brothers. Due to gathering limitations a private service will be held and interment will take place at Fort Custer National Cemetery. Memorial contributions can be made in honor of Alvin to Hospice Care of Southwest Michigan, the Michigan Masonic Home or St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
