Alphonsus Hillary

HILLARY - Alphonsus Liguori Hillary, age 92, of Grand Rapids, passed away on Sunday, December 6, 2009. Much-loved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. Al was preceded in death by his wife of over 50 years, Ethel (Nies), infant son, Roger and two daughters, Noreen (Bob) Earhart and Eileen (Jim) Bolger. He was also preceded in death by six brothers and one sister. Al was the last of the first generation of American Hillarys, son of William F. Hillary, who immigrated from County Clare, Ireland and Margaret (McCarthy) Hillary of Alto, Michigan. Surviving children are Kay (Bill) Markham, Bernard (Pat) Hillary, Ron (Rosalind) Hillary, Ted (Kathy) Hillary, Judy (Tom) Wilt, Ken (Meg) Hillary and Ray (Saori) Hillary; 18 grandchildren and 28 great-grandchildren. Al was a graduate of Grand Rapids Catholic Central and had a forty two year career at Michigan Bell Telephone Company. He enjoyed a long retirement of 30 years. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday 11:00 a.m. at St. Alphonsus Catholic Church, where Al was a lifelong member. (In Procession to church). Interment Resurrection Cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at Arsulowicz Brothers, East Mortuary, 937 Michigan NE, where the Rosary will be prayed Thursday 7:00 p.m. Memorial contributions are suggested to St. Ann's Home, 2161 Leonard NW, Grand Rapids, MI 49504.
