Alden "Al" A. Nielsen, 89, of Allegan, Michigan, passed away peacefully on Thursday, May 28, 2020, at Vicinia Gardens in Otsego, Michigan. Born January 12, 1931, in Allegan, Michigan, he was the son of the late Adler and Ethel (Clark) Nielsen and the husband of the late Eleanor L. (Huff) Nielsen. Al proudly served his country in the United States Air Force from 1950 to 1953 when he was honorably discharged. On August 20, 1955, he married Eleanor at the United Methodist Church, where they have been members for over 60 years. Starting at a young age, Al went to work and had a variety of jobs. He worked at the Fennville Canning Company, Superior Dairy in Allegan, and the Allegan Bakery where he baked his own wedding cake of which he was very proud. In 1965, along with his brother Harry, they opened Nielsen's Gulf Service. After closing the gas station he went to work at Rockwell International as a machinist until the company left town. He then worked for Allegan Public Schools as a bus driver and then as the head mechanic until his retirement. He was a member of the Allegan American Legion Post 89 and the VFW Post 3667 Wood-Laninga. He and Eleanor were members of the Civil Air Patrol Michigan Wing 63 Group 9, and they were among the founding members of the Port-A-Beds camping group. Al spent his life providing for his family and serving his community. The moments shared continue on in beautiful memories to cherish. Al is survived by his children, Tim (Linda) Nielsen, Chris Nielsen, and Anita (David) Sponseller; six grandchildren, Matt (Shaye) Nielsen, David (Mandy) Nielsen, Steve (Rachel) Nielsen, Jerrica Dominique, Allison Nielsen, and Rachel Sponseller; four great-grandchildren, Marcus, Eli, Hannah and Evelyn; his brothers-in-law, Phil Himmelein and Donald (Beverly) Huff; as well as many nieces and nephews. Along with his parents and his wife, he was preceded in death by his sisters, Louise Nielsen, and Arlene (Don) Morse; and his brothers, Harry (Carrie) Nielsen and Mart (June) Nielsen; and sister-in-law Carolyn Himmelein. The family will receive friends on Saturday, July 17, 2021 from 1:00 – 2:00 PM at Gorden Funeral Residence, Allegan Chapel, at which time the Memorial Service will begin at 2:00 PM. After the service, family and friends are invited to the Allegan Methodist Church for Al's favorite treat and fellowship. Donations may be made in Al's name to the Allegan United Methodist Church, 409 Trowbridge Street, Allegan, MI 49010.
