Allan Carl Schmid, husband of Glen Lake local, Ginny Schmid (on the Narrows Apartments), passed away suddenly on Nov. 16, 2008, without pain or incident, in the privacy and comfort of his home in Saginaw. He was 79 years old. He remained professionally active, fit and vital until the day he died.

Allan was preceded in death by his beloved parents, Carl Schmid and Irma (Huston) Schmid; and son, David Schmid.

He is survived by Ginny, his wife of 59 years; and his four children, Philip, Kathryn (Cherry Republic), Melanie (TV 7 and 4), Greg, Greg's wife, Jodi Davis, and David's widow, Sandra. Also surviving are his grandchildren, Michael, Sarah, Stephanie, Cassidy, Alyssa and Carla. Numerous close relatives survive Allan, including the entire Housman family, Cal, Eleanor, Brenda, Brad, Bart, Fran, Stacy and BJ.

Allan graduated Michigan State University in 1951, and graduated with a Juris Doctor from Notre Dame Law School in 1955.

He then engaged in the private practice of Law for the next 46 years until his passing. For many years, he practiced in partnership with daughter, Kathy and son, Greg Schmid. He is a past president of the State of Michigan Bar Association.

Schmid is credited as a principal architect of modern legislative Term Limits in America and was a co-author of two major amendments to the Michigan Constitution, the 1992 Term Limits Amendment and the 1978 Headlee Tax Limitation Amendment. His family takes pride and comfort in the fact that Allan gave freely of himself for the sake of his family, and worked tirelessly as a vigilant advocate of personal liberty, free markets and limited government.

It was his wish, and his family has requested that, in lieu of flowers, well wishers make donations in his honor to the U.S. Term Limits Foundation, 9900 Main St., Suite 303, Fairfax, VA 22031; or, in the alternative, to the American Diabetes Association Foundation, PO Box 11454, Alexandria, VA 22312.

Sympathy cards should be sent to Schmid Law Office, 1840 N. Michigan, Saginaw, MI 48602, where son, Greg carries on family business and political affairs.
