Obituary
Alan Goodman went to meet his Savior on Friday, February 13, 2026. He was born on September 5, 1937 in New Orleans, LA to Paul and Claudia (Goodwin) Goodman. His family moved to Grand Rapids when he was a child and he was raised there. He graduated from Creston High School in 1955.
Al worked a variety of jobs including working for the Michigan Gas Company for many years and finished his career as an independent Real Estate Title Researcher.
He loved music and sang with a men's quartet called The Watchmen. They performed concerts at churches throughout the Grand Rapids area for a number of years. He was also a huge fan of the Michigan Wolverines.
Due to a God-ordained letter to the editor of the Kalamazoo Gazette, Al visited Kalamazoo Wesleyan Church (now Lighthouse Community) and met a woman who he would marry later that year. He married Marti (Gainder) Johnston on July 22, 2000 and with that, shared the responsibility of raising her two sons. He went on to become a member of the church and served as an elder, small group leader, choir director and worship leader.
Al is survived by his wife; daughters, Sharon (Dick) Schrotenboer of Zeeland and Sue (Rob) Granzotto of Grand Rapids; Marti's sons, Sam (Kim) Johnston of Tucson, AZ and Abram (Alicia) Johnston of Montpelier, OH; a brother, Dave (Bette) of Leslie, a sister, Cathy (Barry) Blackburn, Swansborro, NC; 12 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild. He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Paula Goodman and a brother, Pete Goodman.
Al's body was donated to Western Michigan University's School of Medicine.
Visitation will be at Lighthouse Community Church, 4321 South Eleventh St, in Kalamazoo on Friday, February 20 from 6:00-8:00 pm. A memorial service will be held at the church on Saturday the 21st at 11:00 with a luncheon to follow.
