Eldon V. Doerfer, 82, of Weidman died Tuesday, April 11, 2004 at his home.

His funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, April 16, at Lux Funeral Home in Mt. Pleasant with Pastor John Boley of First United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Gardens Cemetery.

Friends may call at Lux Funeral Home on Thursday from 5-8 p.m. and on Friday from 10-11 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that memorial contributions be made to the American Legion Post 110, VFW Post 3033, or Blind Children's Fund. Envelopes are available at Lux Funeral Home.

Eldon was born Jan. 15, 1922, in Mt. Pleasant, the son of Victor and Imogene (Reid) Doerfer. He married Rita Wieber Feb. 14, 1953, in Beal City.

He entered the U.S. Navy in 1942 at the age of 20. He served in four theaters of heavy action on four ships and duty stations earning the rank of Shipfitter 2nd Class and receiving four medals.

He retired from Morbark and was a member of the American Legion and VFW. He enjoyed gardening, home improvements, and mechanics.

Eldon was a caring husband to his surviving wife, Rita. Though he only had an eighth grade education he taught himself welding to provide the best for his three daughters, Arleen (Robert) Molesworth of Applegate, Susan Doerfer of Weidman, and Brenda Doerfer of Elkhart, IN. Many times he had to work away from home to provide the best. Other surviving family members include two grandchildren, Tina Molesworth of Auburn Hills, Angela Molesworth of Port Huron; one great-granddaughter, Dawn Bigger of Auburn Hills; one brother, Russell Doerfer of Jennison; six sisters, Mary Doerfer of Mt. Pleasant, Julia Mrazek of Mt. Pleasant, Geraldine (Edward) Malin of Marquette, Jean (Nick) Chybinski of Alexandria, Va., Ellen Doerfer of Walnut Creek, Ca., and Violet Robinson of Rosebush; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Rose Gaffield; and brothers, John and Richard.
