Robert Eugene Kobernik, 85, died Saturday, March 29, 2014 at Hospice House of Holland.

He was born in Detroit, Michigan to Ewald and Olga (Laube) Kobernik on March 23, 1929. The family moved to Charlevoix County where he completed Horton Bay Grade School. They then moved to Saugatuck in 1945 where he attended Saugatuck High School. Bob went to California with friend Dave (Web) Webster on motorcycles to “seek their fortunes”. He later returned and went to Detroit to work for a heating contractor and then back to Saugatuck to work for an electrician until he was drafted in December 1950 to the US Army during the Korean Conflict.

Many may not know he was an accomplished roller skater – of course owning his own skates, and spent many evenings at the “Big Pavillion”.

In the mid 50’s he ventured out to form his own contracting business which lasted more than 40 years. Bob was an exceptional builder, craftsman, had a love for cars, and took great joy in dancing.

He was preceded in death by sisters/brother sin law, Erna & Henry Engling; Gertrude & Max Wilde; brothers/sisters in law, Bruno & Carol Kobernik, Kurt Kobernik and Joni Kobernik.

Bob is survived by his wife, Catherine Page; son, Alan Robert & Cheryl Kobernik of Frankfort, MI; stepsons, Luke Rollins-Page and Andrew and Ana Rollins; grandchildren, Emily Kobernik and Eric Kobernik; second wife, Linda Czerkies of Grand Rapids; first wife Murlyn (Smith) Vollink; brother Carl Kobernik; sister in law Betty Kobernik; nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be 11:00 am Tuesday at the First Congregational Church of Saugatuck, 296 Hoffman, with the Rev. Rob Brink officiating.

Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery in Saugatuck.

Visitation will be 6-8 pm Monday at the Dykstra Funeral Home-Mulder Chapel, 188 West 32nd Street, in Holland. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
