Life Story / Obituary
Lavern Rewerts was born on November 15, 1926, to proud parents Frank and Susanna (Decker) Rewerts. The Rewerts family lived in rural Piper City, Illinois, where Lavern spent his childhood. As a young man, Lavern was proud to serve his country in the United States Army.
On August 22, 1951, Lavern married the love of his life, Margaret Stark. The young couple was married at the Asbury United Methodist Church in Kankakee, Illinois. Lavern and Margaret would be lifelong members of Asbury United Methodist, with Lavern serving as the church treasurer for a number of years. Lavern earned a living working at the Bergeron Acceptance Corporation, where he was be employed for over twenty-five years. He later moved on to the Consumer Loan Department of Kankakee Federal, where he stayed until his retirement.
Lavern was an active and committed member of many community organizations. Some of his clubs included the Chebanse Masonic Lodge #429, the Bloomington Consistory, the Royal Jester Court #48 of Chicago, the Medinah Shrine Club, the Hundred Club, and the Loyal Order of the Moose. He served as the president of the Eastern Star, and was a Patron of Dorcas Chapter #5 Order of the Eastern Star of Illinois. Lavern also participated in many organization devoted to community service, such as the Kankakee Kiwanis Club, the Salvation Army of Kankakee, and the Riverside Medical Center Auxiliary.
Lavern “Ben” F. Rewerts passed away at Miller Health Care Center, Kankakee, on May 17, 2012, at the age of 85. He is survived by his wife, Margaret; his sister and brother in law, Elizabeth and Clarence Rubin of Kankakee, Illinois; and several nieces and nephews. Lavern was preceded in death by his brothers, George K. Rewerts and Floyd W. Rewerts, and his sister-in-law, Donna Rewerts.
A gathering of family and friends will be held on Sunday, May 20, at the Schreffler Life Story Funeral Home, 1900 West Court Street, Kankakee, IL. 60901, from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., with Masonic rites at 6:30 p.m. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, May 21, at the funeral home, with the Rev. Steven Goodin officiating. Entombment will be at the Mound Grove Cemetery, Kankakee. In lieu of flowers memorials should be given to The Hairy Cell Leukemia Research Foundation, 2345 County Farm Lane, Schaumburg, IL. 60194, Asbury United Methodist Church, the Salvation Army in Kankakee, or St Paul’s Lutheran Church Building Fund in Bourbonnais, IL.
