Basil Schroder

LIFESTORY:
Basil “Dutch” Schroder, 88, of Ossineke died Monday May 7, 2012. He was born April 5, 1924 in Detroit to Eunice and Lou Schroder. Dutch served our country in the Army having been a part of the third wave that stormed the beaches of Normandy. Dutch met Rose Tank before leaving over seas. They continued to correspond until he returned state side and the two of them went on to enjoy 61 years of marriage. He was a proud member of the Operating Engineers Union 324 where he had a hand in working on the Zilwaukee Bridge. He worked for the Specialty Pharmacy for several years as well. Dutch was a lifetime member of VFW post 2496, enjoyed puzzle books, playing Euchre out to the Cycle Club, spending time shooting the breeze at Frank Grahams place, and sharing inside jokes with friends and family like the moniker “Brazil”.
Surviving are his children; Pam Schroder-Schilbe of Alpena, and Basil “Bud” (Sandy) Schroder of Manton, MI, two grandsons; Jacob (Leeann) Kangas, and Ben Kangas, one great-granddaughter; Lilly Rose – the “Apple of Basils Eye”, special companion Mary O’Brien, and sister in-law; Faye Schroder. He was preceded by his wife Rose, son in-law; Richard, one brother and one sister.
Dutch is at McWilliams Funeral Home - Alpena. Visitation will be on Wednesday from 10 a.m. until the time of the memorial service at 11 a.m. with services by VFW post 2496.
