Life Story / Obituary

John Winsor Noonan, 84, of Saugatuck passed away Tuesday, Feb. 24, 2015, at Holland Hospital.

After growing up on Long Island, N.Y., John attended Emporia State University in Emporia, Kan., where he played football and was active in Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity. Upon graduation, he began his career as a sales manager for Sinclair Oil Corporation (later ARCO/Lyondell Chemical) where he worked for 40 years until his retirement.

John met his wife of 59 years, Rosemary Cronin, while they were working summer jobs at the Stanley Hotel in Estes Park, Colo. After marrying and living in Kansas City, St. Louis and Cape Girardeau, Mo., Des Moines, Iowa and Columbus, Ohio, the family settled in West Bloomfield.

The Noonans purchased the Civil War-era building at the corner of Hoffman and Butler Streets in Saugatuck in 1977, where they ran The Surrey of Saugatuck, a men's and women's clothing store for 20 years.

Ultimately becoming a full-time resident, John was passionate about the Saugatuck-Douglas community and enjoyed being a business owner and supporter of many area organizations. After selling The Surrey, John and Rosemary purchased a home in Pier Cove, which the family still owns.

In retirement, he was active in the Saugatuck-Douglas Historical Society and instrumental in the Felt Mansion restoration project. He loved the Detroit Lions and Tigers, vintage cars, collecting antiques, living in "the country" and all animals-especially dogs and his "granddog" Lexie.

John is survived by his wife Rosemary; children, Sharma Musser of State College, Pa., Gregory Noonan of Boulder, Colo. and Todd Noonan of Pier Cove; grandchildren, Eric Musser, Jillian Musser and Lydia Musser; and sister Dorothy Bradley (Malcolm) of Baldwin, N.Y.

He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Dorothy Noonan of Floral Park, N.Y.

A memorial service will be Saturday, March 7, at 11 a.m. at Community Church of Douglas. Friends may visit with the family one-hour prior to the service.

Memorial contributions can be made to Community Church of Douglas or Wishbone Pet Rescue Alliance, P.O. Box 124, Douglas, MI 49406.

The family is being provided services by Dykstra Funeral Homes – Mulder Chapel.
