Walter Jerome (Jerry) Roper died September 29, 2014 after a long battle with Alzheimer’s Disease. He was born in Cleveland, Ohio on June 18, 1929, the son of Val and Betty Roper.

Jerry enlisted in the U.S. Army following WWII and served in the JAG Corps. He had a successful law practice in Holland for over 50 years. He was a faithful member of Grace Episcopal Church where he acted as treasurer for 30 years. He was deeply involved in the community with several organizations including the Kiwanis Club, Salvation Army, Elks, Holland Rescue Mission, and the Holland Area Arts Council. He had a zest for life and lived every day to the fullest. He enjoyed long distance cycling and canoeing for many years. He also loved traveling, reading, cooking, listening to classical music, and spending time with his family.

Jerry was preceded in death by his parents and son, Robert Roper. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Phyllis Roper, sons, David Roper and Jim Roper, daughters, Cynthia (John) Raven and Cathy (Gary) Marshall, and daughter-in-law, Kathy Roper. He is also survived by 8 grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren, sister-in-law Jane (Dave) Miller, nieces, nephews, and cousins.

A memorial service will be held on Monday at 1:00 pm at Grace Episcopal Church in Holland. Visitation will be Sunday 4-6 pm at the Mulder Chapel, Dykstra Funeral Homes 188 West 32nd St. Officiating will be the Rev. Jennifer Adams. Memorial contributions may be made to the Salvation Army.
