Zelena Amaro

With what should have been nearly her entire life ahead of her, Zelena Amaro was suddenly taken from her loved ones much too soon. She was a delightful young lady who was on fire to experience everything that life had to offer. Zelena was kind and mindful of others, the sort of person who would do anything for anyone. Her family was her rock, and their love was the foundation on which all of her joys and successes were built. Although there are no answers as to why her journey was cut so tremendously short, the lives Zelena touched throughout her time here are to be celebrated. She will be deeply missed and warmly remembered.

The decade of the 1990s was the age of technology with the birth of the internet in 1992, which opened the door to email, shopping from the comfort of our own homes, and business opportunities as well. Nestled within this colorful time was the year 1993 that was peppered with several noteworthy events. This was the year of the first bombing of the World Trade Center in addition to the raid of a religious compound by federal agents. We were entertained by music from Mariah Carey and the Spice Girls while a certain group of friends who frequented their local coffee shop kept us laughing every Thursday night on television. During this same year a young couple was focused on a joyous time in their own family as they were eagerly anticipating the birth of their new baby. Their wait was over on October 5th when the baby girl they named Zelena Esmerelda drew her first breath in Berrien Springs, Michigan. Her parents, Manuel and Nancy (Zamora) Amaro Jr. were thrilled with the birth of their first child. Zelena was raised in the family home alongside her younger siblings, Matais and Riva. Her father worked in agriculture on Decatur Farms six months out of the year afterward He headed down South to the Valley in south Texas. During that time he decided to stay in Michigan.

Throughout her life there was never anything more important in Zelena’s life than her family. As the older sister, Zelena’s brother always looked up to her, and so did her little sister. When Zelena became more grown up, her sister often crept into her room to put on her high heels and makeup. Zelena loved spending time with her family and always looked forward to their cookouts. An important part of family life in their home were their dogs including a boxer named Rocky, a Chihuahua named China, and an English bulldog named Rocky.

In many ways Zelena experienced an upbringing that was rather typical for the youth of her generation. She attended local schools where she began playing soccer and basketball at Cooper Elementary. In 2000 the Amaro family moved to the Cooper and Plainwell area where she continued to play basketball and volleyball through her junior year at Plainwell High School. Zelena also sang in the choir during high school. She proudly graduated this past spring and was looking forward to taking classes at Kalamazoo Valley Community College where she planned to focus either on bilingual teaching or dental hygienist this fall.

As her friends and family can attest, Zelena fully embraced every day she was given. She enjoyed sports, dancing, singing, listening to music, and hanging out with friends. Zelena was a bubbly and outgoing young lady who made friends with ease. In addition to holding down her studies and being an athlete, she worked on a farm and also babysat while in school. Zelena later got a job as a cashier at Meijer. With a heart that beat to help others, she volunteered in a variety of ways at school and also donated blood. She had the time of her life this past spring when a friend’s mother took Zelena and five other girls to Panama City where they made treasured memories together. She also loved going to the beach and lake in addition to sleepovers at friends’ houses.

Life will never be the same without Zelena Amaro here - without her contagious love for life, without her warm smile, without her love. Although her days numbered far less than many are given, her impact on the world around her was no less significant. The memories she leaves behind will remain forever near and dear to the hearts of those too numerous to count.

Zelena Esmeralda Amaro of Plainwell died on July 9, 2012. Zelena’s family includes her parents: Manuel and Nancy (Zamora) Amaro; her brother, Matias; sister, Riva; grandparents: Santos and Esmeralda Zamora, Jr., Manuel & Rita Amaro Sr.; and many friends. Visit with her family and friends and view her life story film on Thursday from 4:00-7:00 with a Scripture Service at 6:00 at the Life Story Funeral Home, Plainwell; 120 Woodhams St. (685-5881). A funeral mass will be held on Friday at 11:00 a.m. at St. Margaret’s Catholic Church; 766 S. Farmer St., Otsego. Parecía que tenía toda su vida por delante, pero de repente los queridos de Zelena Amaro la perdieron mucho antes de lo esperado. Era una mujer encantadora que tenía gran pasión por vivir todas las experiencias que la vida podría ofrecerle. Zelena era amable con los demás, el tipo de persona que haría cualquier cosa por cualquier persona. Su familia era su bastón donde y su amor era la base en que todas sus felicidades y éxitos estaban construidas. Aunque no hay respuestas con respecto a porque su vida se quedo tremendamente corto, las vidas que tocó Zelena en su tiempo aquí deberían de ser celebradas. Será echado mucho de menos y recordado con mucho cariño.

La década de los 90 fue la era de la tecnología con el nacimiento del internet en 1992, que abrió la puerta al email, comprando desde la comodidad de nuestra casa, y teniendo grandes oportunidades de negocio. Acurrucado dentro de esta época era el año 1993 que fue notado por algunos eventos importantes. Este era el año del primer bombardeo del World Trade Center además del asalto de un edificio religioso por agentes federales. Nos entretenía la música de Mariah Carey y los Spice Girls mientras un cierto grupo de amigos que frecuentaban su cafetería nos hacían reír cada jueves por la noche viendo la televisión. Durante este mismo año una pareja joven viviendo un tiempo feliz en familia esperaban con entusiasmo el nacimiento de su bebe. Se acabó la espera el 5 de Octubre cuando la niña que llamó Zelena Esmeralda respiró por primera vez en Berrien Springs, Michigan. Sus padres, Manuel y Nancy (Zamora)Amaro Jr. Estaban encantados con el nacimiento de su primera hija. Zelena se crió en la casa familiar junto con sus hermanos pequeños, Matías y Riva. Su padre trabajaba en la agricultura en la granja Decatur seis meses al año. Después, se iba al sur de Valley en el sur de Tejas. Durante ese tiempo fue cuando decidió quedarse en Michigan.

Durante toda su vida lo más importante para Zelena era su familia. Como la hermana mayor, el hermano de Zelena siempre la admiraba, y también su hermana pequeña. Cuando Zelena empezó a madurar, su hermana frecuentemente entraba en su cuarto para ponerse sus tacones y maquillarse. A Zelena le encantaba pasar tiempo con su familia y siempre tenía muchas ganas de barbacoa. Una parte importante de su vida en familia en casa eran sus perros, incluyendo un bóxer llamado Rocky, un Chihuahua llamado China, y un bulldog Ingles llamado Rocky.

En muchos sentidos Zelena experimentó una educación bastante típica para los jóvenes de su generación. Asistió a los colegios locales donde empezó a jugar el futbol y baloncesto en el colegio Cooper Elementary. En 2000 la familia Amaro se mudó por el área de Cooper y Plainwell donde continuo jugando al baloncesto y voleibol los tres primeros años en su colegio Plainwell High School. Como sus amigos y familia pueden confirmar, Zelena vivía cada día al máximo. Disfrutaba practicando deporte, cantando, escuchando música y pasando tiempo con sus amigos. Zelena era una mujer extrovertida y llena de vida quien hacia amigos con facilidad. Además de estudiar y ser atleta, trabajaba en una granja y también cuidaba niños mientras estaba en el colegio. Zelena luego consiguió un trabajo como cajera en Meijer. Con un corazón que latía para ayudar a los demás, ella se ofreció como voluntaria en varias formas en el colegio y también donaba sangre. Ella vivió una experiencia inolvidable esta primavera pasada cuando la madre de una amiga llevó a Zelena y cinco amigas a Panama City donde hicieron memorias preciadas. También le encantaba ira la playa y al lago además de dormir en casa de las amigas.

La vida jamás será igual sin Zelena Amaro- sin su amor contagioso por la vida, sin su sonrisa afectuosa, sin su amor. Aunque sus días fueron mucho menor de lo esperado, su impacto en el mundo a su alrededor no fue menos significante.
