Passed away Wednesday morning, October 19, 2005. Tom was born November 7, 1910 in Scottdale, PA the son of Thomas H. and Anna (Komm) and had been a resident in the Kalamazoo area for most of his life. Tom was a graduate of Western Michigan University in 1935, and received his Master's Degree from the University of Michigan. He went on to be a professor at Western for over 30 years and retired in 1975. He also coached football, basketball, and baseball for WMU, along with receiving the "W" Club Man of the Year Award; and was inducted into the WMU Hall of Fame. Tom also enjoyed attending Western's sporting events, camping, historical writing, and traveling. He was preceded in death by a son, Tom Slaughter, Jr.; a granddaughter, Jennifer Timmons; and 2 brothers and sisters. On June 25, 1938 he was united in marriage to his loving wife, the former Susie Sluka who survives. Also surviving are 2 daughters, Elizabeth Chisholm of Kalamazoo, Julia (Terry) Timmons of Atlanta; 5 grandchildren, Tom (Betsy) Chisholm, Kyle (Beth) Chisholm, Julie Chisholm, Samantha Timmons, Amanda (Steve) Farmer; 2 sisters, Avis (Gene) Smith, Carol Burke-Bauman; and several nieces and nephews. Services will be held 11:00 o'clock Friday at the Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, 504 S. Westnedge, with Rev. Ken Johnson officiating. Friends may meet the family this evening from 6-8pm at the Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Westside Chapel, 3926 South 9th Street. Private interment of cremains will be held at a later date. Memorials may be directed to the WMU General Scholarship Fund or Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church.
