Life Story / Obituary

Judy Ann Schroeder was born in Detroit, Michigan on August 30, 1951, the daughter of Gustave and Mary (Hessell) Schroeder. She was a member of St. Dorothy’s Parish in Warren, Michigan at the time of her entrance into the Congregation of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Nazareth on August 12, 1973. Her reception was on August 13, 1976, she pronounced first vows on June 11, 1978 and final vows on September 19, 1981.

Sister Judy received a Bachelors Degree from Nazareth College and a Master’s Degree from Western Michigan University majoring in Social Work. Sister Judy began her ministry in Social Work at Bronson Hospital in Kalamazoo, Michigan while attending Western Michigan University. She also worked in the Van Buren Intermediate School District and many years in the Diocesan office in Gaylord, Michigan as a Social Worker. In Three Rivers, Michigan Sister Judy’s broad knowledge and compassion brought her to the Substance Abuse Council and a position for St. Joseph County. In 1995 a call to Leadership brought Sister Judy to the Sisters of St. Joseph Leadership Team in Nazareth, Michigan and then as the Program Coordinator in the Transformations Spirituality Center. In 2002, Sister Judy began her own private practice counseling abuse victims which in 2006 led her to the Elizabeth Upjohn Community Healing Center in Human Services as a therapist. In 2009 Sister Judy worked with the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Battle Creek, Michigan counseling Veterans who suffered from issues such as PTSD, mental illness or substance abuse. Serious illness took Judy out of active ministry but she continued her concern and prayer for the people with whom she walked for so many years.

Sister Judy's reflection at her Silver Jubilee expresses her commitment to God's people and the different ministries which filled her life: "It is amazing to reflect on how the Spirit has guided (my) journey and revealed to me the face of God in the people I have met…,Native-American children, individuals with different addictions, government officials, board room trustees, our congregational leadership team… each a unique opportunity to see and be God's loving presence."

Surely, Judy's greatest desire has been fulfilled: to be now totally in that loving presence!

May She Rest In Peace!
