Life Story / Obituary

Winowiecki, OP, Sister Catherine Ann of Grand Rapids (born Ann Winowiecki in Leelanau County, MI) died on March 8, 2017. She was 90 years old and a Dominican Sister for 70 years. Sister Catherine Ann (known fondly as Sister Katie) served in food service at St. Mary, Carson City; Holy Cross, Santa Cruz, NM; St. James Convent, Beaver Island; Nazareth Hospital, Albuquerque, NM; St. Joseph Seminary, Grand Rapids; Marywood and Aquinata Hall, Grand Rapids. She was an excellent baker and a welcoming community member. She also served in Wisconsin as a live-in caregiver and prayer companion and after returning to Marywood volunteered for thirteen years in the Marywood mailroom. Sister Katie had a genuine interest in the people she encountered. She enjoyed listening to music, reading, crocheting, writing letters, making cards and going for long walks. In fact, unless the weather was severe, Sister Katie was outdoors with her face in the sun and the wind at her back, up until the very end of her days when such sojourns were no longer possible. Sister Catherine Ann is survived by her sister Geraldine (Jim) Brown, Conklin, MI; and her brother Jerry Winowiecki, Grand Rapids, MI; nieces and nephews, many friends and members of her Dominican Community. Sister Catherine Ann will repose at Dominican Chapel/Marywood, 2025 Fulton Street East, with visitation on Friday, March 10 from 6:00-7:00 pm, followed by a Remembering Service at 7:00 pm. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11:00 am on Saturday, March 11 at Dominican Chapel/Marywood. Burial will be at Resurrection Cemetery. Memorials in Sister Catherine Ann Winowiecki’s name may be made to the Grand Rapids Dominican Sisters Health Care Fund.
