Sharon Oppenhuizen

Sharon G. Oppenhuizen, age 71, of Kalamazoo, MI lost her battle with cancer on Sunday July 30, 2017. Sharon was born September 24, 1945 in Moulton, AL the daughter of the late Merlyn and Juanita (Bryant) Peterson. She moved to Kalamazoo in 1952 where she attended Parchment Schools and graduated in 1964. Sharon managed Senior Citizens Living Centers in Southwestern Michigan counties and retired in 2007. She loved to read, play scrabble, watch NASCAR races, and volunteered with the Rod Benders car club activities. Sharon mostly enjoyed spending time with her family and friends. She is survived by her loving children, Tracy (Colonel Retired Andrew) McConachie, Gerrit Oppenhuizen; her sister, Shelia (William) Novess; many nieces and nephews; and her favorite cat, Remy. A memorial service will be held at 2:00pm Thursday, August 10 at the Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Memorial Chapel, 622 S. Burdick. Friends may meet the family one hour prior to the service from 1:00-2:00pm. Private interment will be held in Mt. Ever-Rest Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the West Michigan Cancer Center or the Kalamazoo Humane Society.
