Sara H. (Sally), Kalamazoo, MI, passed away Monday August 27, 2018 at age 102 in Kalamazoo. Sally was born 7/31/1916 in New Liberty, Kentucky, the daughter of David and Sallie (Sutton) Howerton. She was a graduate of Hiram College (B.A. 1938) and Western Michigan University (Masters of Library Science, 1969). On 8/19/1939 she was united in marriage to Elwyn F. (Doc) Carter in New York City. They were long time residents of Kalamazoo. For many years she worked as a Librarian at Kalamazoo Valley Community College. Sally was a member of First Presbyterian Church, WMU Faculty Dames, Women's Symphony Society, Sigma Alpha Iota Patroness, Beta Phi Mu, D.A.R., Kalamazoo Travel Club, Tuesday Musicale, and actively involved in the Kalamazoo Figure Skating Club, Girl Scouts and Cub Scouts. Some of Sally's happiest memories as a faculty wife were entertaining and supporting the WMU Varsity Vagabonds and later Gold Company. Sally enjoyed joining the Varsity Vagabonds on 3 of their overseas USO tours. After retirement Sally and Doc enjoyed creating many relationships and friendships in Largo Florida and summers at the family cottage in Northern Michigan. In the recent years she enjoyed many of her friends while living at Friendship Village and listening to Library for the Blind Books on Tape. Sally was preceded in death by her husband Elwyn Carter, son David Carter, grand-daughter Amy Kathleen Carter and brother George Howerton. Surviving are her children, Scott Carter (Jacque), Cameron Carter and Mary Carter (Todd Kennedy) all of Kalamazoo and Portage. Ten grandchildren Michelle Jackson, Eric, Ann and Mary Wilbur, Christine Lindberg, Jason and Stephen Carter, Ashley Carter-Youngblood, Amanda and Nathan Jeppesen. Two step-grandchildren Melissa and Amanda Kennedy. 18 great grandchildren and 3 great-great grandchildren. Quiet, kind and subtle was her approach. She served others, often at significant cost and effort to herself and she did so willingly and cheerfully. She would like to be remembered with humor and love. A memorial service to celebrate Sally's life will be held in the Kiva at Friendship Village, 1400 N. Drake Rd., Kalamazoo on Saturday, November 10, 2018 at 2:00. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions in Sally's honor can be made to the Elwyn Carter Memorial Vocal Music Scholarship, WMU Foundation, 1903 W. Michigan Ave, Kalamazoo MI 49008.
