Collison, Sara L. Kalamazoo Sara went home to be with her precious Lord and Savior on Wednesday, December 9. She passed quietly at home with her Bible in her lap. She was born July 8, 1944 in Kalamazoo, the daughter of Isadore and Dorotha Goldstein. On August 26, 1965, she was united in marriage to Glen E. Collison. Sara was engaging to all who she met. You could see that Sara made friends everywhere she went. Her capacity for welcoming and engaging people was wide. From hospital, to church, to community, she built lifetime friendships and had a great love for many. You could see that Sara was a cheerleader and encourager of each person's unique gifts. Her greatest love was for Jesus and this life-changing relationship was at the center of her soul and radiantly expressed outwardly and through everything she put her hand to. In Sara, you could see a life of worship made visible. In her 47 years of marriage to Glen, she had a powerful partnership that bore remarkable fruit. You could see how their incredible bond and complimentary gifts was the source of her greatest endeavors. They were a collaborative team in work, life, and ministry. With coffee in hand, Sara juggled daily challenges with vigor and purpose. You could see the heart of caregiver in hospital, elder care facility, group home, and home as a RN, teacher, and trainer of CPR at the VA Hospital in Battle Creek. Whether on violin or singing, you could see her love of making music woven into the fabric of her days. She championed the holistic care of developmentally disabled adults for decades. Creating the Homestead, group homes, facilities, and organizations that provide compassionate care. In the creating and developing of S.H.A.L.O.M., Inc, Self-Help Alternative Living Opportunities of Michigan, and the S.H.A.L.O.M Network of Kalamazoo, you could see that Sara had discovered her deepest life work. In the pages of her memoir, What's In Your Hand, the Journey to SHALOM, you could see her unbridled heart for God and passion to fulfill his work in the world, every step of her journey. Sara lived a life of passionate pursuit. She was preceded in death by Glen E. Collison, and Logan J. Collison and is survived by her three children, Michael (Linda) Collison of Little Chute, WI, Dan (Holly) Collison of Minneapolis, MN and Julie (Doc) Stevens of Cooper Twp.; eight grandchildren, Alyssa (Matthew), Ryan (Sara), Rachel, Walker, Atley, Calvin (Nina), Noah and Brendan; sisters Rosalind (Rich) Wolhowe of Michigan City, IN, Marilyn (Duane) Wallace of Michigan City, IN, Adina (Sam) Pinsky of Minneapolis MN, and brother Raymond (Nancy) Goldstein of Flint, MI, as well as ten nieces and nephews. A celebration of her life is planned for Sunday, December 12 at 1pm at Haven Church, 5350 N. Sprinkle Road. Interment will be on Monday, Dec 13 at 10:00 AM in East Cooper Cemetery Riverview Drive at E. D Avenue.
