Ruth Ellen Veldt

Ruth was born June 2, 1928 to Harm Veldt Sr. and Jennie(Timmerman) Veldt in Cooper Twp. Michigan. She was raised on a family farm in Texas Township with 4 brothers and 3 sisters. Ruth was baptized on September 5, 1943. She graduated from Schoolcraft High School in 1946.

Ruth attended the Women and Children's Hospital School of Nursing and the Cook County School of Nursing (Chicago) in 1948 where she studied Pediatric Nursing including Childhood Nutrition and Behavioral Development of the Child. In 1949 she studied at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Hines Illinois. Ruth became a registered nurse in both Illinois and Michigan in 1950.

Ruth served in the Air Force/Air Force Reserve/ and Michigan Air National Guard from February 1951 until she was Honorably discharged in June 1959. She served as a nurse and received the National Defense Service Medal while in the Air Force.

Ruth received a Bachelor of Science degree in Education and a Secondary Provisional Certificate from Western Michigan University in 1959 for the teaching of Home Economics, Science and Foods in grades nine through twelve.

Ruth worked for the Arab America Oil Company (Aramco) in Saudi Arabia as a nurse. She took an Approved Educational leave in 1967 and studied at the University of Colorado Medical Center in 1967. She returned to Aramco where she worked until she retired in 1973. Later, she worked at the Veterans Administration Hospital at Camp Custer. Ruth traveled extensively with her sister Betty. They visited many foreign countries together and both spent much of their professional lives overseas.

Ruth has been part of the Wyndham Community in Kalamazoo since 2011 where she has made many friends and created lasting relationships. She was very active in her community where she enjoyed gardening, knitting, solving puzzles, reading, and spending quality time with friends. The family would like to expend their gratitude to the staff at Wyndham for their compassionate care of Ruth for the past several years.

Ruth passed away on January 16, 2018 surrounded by friends and family. She is survived by her brother Frank (Mary) Veldt, sister Jean (Louie) Burns, sister-in-law, Joann Veldt and many nieces and nephews and loyal friends, John and Bonnie Preston. She was preceded in death by her

parents Harm Veldt Sr. and Jennie (Timmerman) Veldt, brother Harm, Jr. (Virginia) Veldt, brother Neil (Annianne) Veldt, sister Ann Veldt, sister Bette Veldt, brother Roger Veldt.

Friends and Family will gather together on Wednesday January 31, 2018 from 1:00 to 3:00 pm at the Wyndham Apartments multi-purpose room at 2300 Portage St., Kalamazoo, MI 49001 to celebrate Ruth's life. Please bring any pictures or stories that you would like to share.
