DeVries , Roland 3/29/1927 - 9/25/2018 KALAMAZOO Age 91, went to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on September 25, 2018. Roland was born in Kalamazoo, MI, on March 29, 1927, the son of the late John and Kate (Schreuder) DeVries. In addition to his parents, Roland was preceded in death by a son, John DeVries; six brothers, Bill, Harm, Ed, Joe, Henry, John and a sister, Grace. He attended the Kalamazoo Christian Schools and in 1945 enlisted in the U.S. Navy where he served our country with honor until being discharged. Roland was a kind and loving man who had a strong faith in the Lord. He was a hard worker who retired from the Hydreco Company after 34 years. When not working, he loved woodworking, cooking, was an avid golfer and enjoyed fishing trips to Canada. He was a long time faithful member of Second Christian Reformed Church where he served as an elder and deacon. Roland had a giving heart and was always willing to help those in need. He enjoyed volunteering at ARO for many years. Roland was a faithful husband, loving father and grandfather and great-grandfather. He leaves his family with many wonderful memories to cherish of a life well lived. On November 10, 1948, he married Carolyn D. Bourdo, who survives. Roland is also survived by four children, Vicki (Donald) DeVries, Peggy (William) Hauke, Roland (Dawn) DeVries, Rodney (Sarah) DeVries; six grandchildren, Tim (Tara) DeVries, Tom (Stephanie) DeVries, Nick (Kim) Gianakis, Melanie (Nate) Batts, Kayla (Tyler) Knotts, Jaimie (Robert Lienhard) DeVries, twelve great-grandchildren; a brother, Ray (Crystal) DeVries; two sister-in-laws, Sylvia and Leora; many nieces, nephews cousins and friends. A funeral service will be held on Monday, October 1, 2018, beginning at 11:30 AM at Second Christian Reformed Church, 3015 Nichols Rd., Kalamazoo, MI. Visitation will take place at the funeral home on Sunday, September 30, 2018, from 5:00 to 8:00 PM. To those who wish to attend, burial will take place at Ft. Custer National Cemetery on Monday, October 1, 2018, at 10:00AM (please gather at the assembly area at 9:45AM.) Memorial contributions may be made to Rose Arbor Hospice Residence and Second Christian Reformed Church.
