Obituary
Robert Danforth Winters, Age 98, died October 7, 2025, at Heritage Community in Kalamazoo, Michigan. His loving daughter was by his side. Celebration of Life will be a family event at a later time.
During WWII Bob attended Perdue University in the Navy V-12 Program, where he was able to share his joy of music by playing his trombone in the marching band. Bob graduated with a Bachelor of Science and a Bachelor of Naval Science and Tactics.
Bob was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 65 years, Ione (Wickersham) Winters. They met on a blind date in Ann Arbor, Michigan where Bob attended the University of Michigan Law School. Ione had enlisted in the Cadet Nurse Corps and was sent to University of Michigan for her nurse's training. After the end of the war, she worked at University Hospital as an RN.
During the Korean War, Bob reenlisted in the Navy and served as the Executive Officer of the USS Rio Grande, Stationed in Pearl Harbor. Ione joined Bob in Hawai'i where they were married. Bob and Ione returned frequently to Honolulu, where they had many friends and felt entirely at home.
After the war, Bob and his family lived in Decatur, Illinois. Bob was a highly respected attorney, skilled in trial work. In recognition of his skill, ethical conduct and civility he was invited to be a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers. Bob became a senior partner of the law firm, Winters, Featherstun, Gaumer, Kenney, Postlewait, Stocks, and Flynn. Bob retired September 1, 2001.
Bob is survived by his daughter Laura Jean Winters, two grandchildren, two great grandchildren, three nieces, a nephew, and a great nephew.
Bob's approach to life was "it was great" and to "have fun", for him, life was just that, a fun great adventure. Bob loved travel - around the world and across the nation. The happy twinkle in his eye and ready smile will be deeply missed. To view Bob's personalized guestbook, please visit https://www.langelands.com
