Robert Allen Weeber went to be his Lord on February 8, 2017. He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Mathilda Goulooze Weeber of Grand Rapids, his brother John Weeber of Holland MI, his sister Ruth Derteen and brother-in-law Ralph Ericksen both of Grand Rapids.

Bob grew up as a member of Berean Baptist Church and played on the state champion basketball team of 1943 for Davis Technical High School.

Called up into the US Navy in August 1944, Bob became active with the Navigators Christian outreach group during his tour of duty in the South Pacific. Upon discharge he attended Wheaton College, Wheaton IL to study Bible, became president of the Wheaton chapter of the Foreign Missions Fellowship and met his future bride, Dorothy Jean Ligtvoet, of Bethel Baptist Church in Kalamazoo MI. Two sessions of the Wycliffe Bible Translators' Summer Institute of Linguistics, two years at Columbia Bible College in Columbia SC and two years on the start-up faculty of Ben Lippen School in Asheville NC were undertaken by the couple in preparation for a life in Bible translation.

Married in August 1951, Bob and Dot joined the Central American Mission team, assembled financial support and began language school in San Jose, Costa Rica. When their youngest child needed treatment for polio, they decided to return to the US.

They returned also to a growing Ben Lippen School where Bob taught and coached, finally following the school to Columbia SC where he directed alumni relations, putting to good use his passionately encyclopedic memory of the students he had known and loved during his 44 years at the Christian boarding school.

Bob will be missed by his wife of 65 years, Dorothy Jean; by his sisters Mary Ericksen and Carol Reigling; by his children and their families, Judy Dahl and husband John of Arvada CO, John and Juliet Mills Weeber and grandson John Gabriel of Paris France, Joy Weeber of Raleigh NC, Jeanne and Thomas Jones and grand-daughter Alex of Richmond VA and Janice and Howard Steensma and grandson Josh all of Hastings MI and grand-daughter Brittany of Crowne Pointe IN; by hundreds of students and young athletes whose lives he touched as a teacher, coach or counselor and by his cherished community at St Andrews Evangelical Church in Columbia SC.

His funeral service will be held on Saturday, February 11, 2017 at 2 PM at Rest Haven Homes, 1424 Union Ave NE, Grand Rapids where friends may visit with his family beginning at 1:30 PM.The family would like to thank the staff at Rest Haven for their loving care of our Dad. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Ben Lippen School, Columbia SC. To share a memory or photo, or to sign his guestbook, visit www.lifestorynet.com
